Introducing the Maine Wedding Company

No matter where we’ve lived, my wife Beth seems to wind up right in the thick of things.  She’s a very talented wedding photographer and owner of Blush Imagery–and she seems to know everyone in this town. She’s one of those Connector Types–a person who makes fast friends with people of all kinds and who is always introducing people to others they should know.

So, it wasn’t much of a surprise when, a couple of years ago, Beth brought up the idea of creating a wedding company that would serve and celebrate the many fine folks in Maine’s wedding industry.

Starting from that little seed, her idea has grown (with much tending and care).  I’m so proud to be able to broadcast her initial announcement of the Maine Wedding Company.  You can read more about what she’s up to on her blog, Applying Blush.   (Ahem….She’s looking for testers!)

Fitzgerald Photo at upcoming PUG

What is a pug? No, it’s not the curly-tailed, bug-eyed kind. PUGs (Pictage User Groups) are wedding and portrait photographers organized in local groups around the US. Most attendees are customers of Pictage (hence the name), a photo lab that is much, much more.

Local PUG organizer Emilie of Emilie Inc. invited me and several other commercial photographers to take part in a panel discussion at the next gathering, July 15. We’ll be there to show some of our work, discuss questions on things like licensing, etc. and generally have a good time talking shop.

I’m excited because it’s a good opportunity to see colleagues and to meet some new talent. Although we are all photographers, there are notable differences between wedding and commercial photography–not just in terms of subject matter, but also when it comes to things like clientele and workflow. Primarily, we deal with businesses and agencies and wedding photographers work directly with consumers. As such, there are some differing traditions in terms of licensing and use of commercial images that most (but not all) wedding and portrait shooters may not be aware of.

When it all comes down to it, though, we all are creative, motivated, visual people who are lucky enough to make a living doing what we truly love. Looking forward to July!

One Image

This is my favorite image from a weekend shoot. It’s a bit of a rarity; although I help shoot weddings with our sister company, Blush Imagery, I don’t often get a chance to work with other photographers. On this particular occasion, I worked with Amanda Herzberger, a talented shooter from Connecticut, and since I wasn’t the primary photographer I was free to shoot “color”. Basically, this is the feature-type images that capture more of the mood and context of the day. While Amanda had to shoot the couple exchanging vows at the altar, I was able to photograph a wide angle shot of the church showing boys dangling off the sides of the pews. Take both types of shots together, and you’ve got a great, balanced body of work that truly shows the moments and the story of the entire day. For me, this single image was a bit unexpected and captured the flavor of the beautiful setting–Migis Lodge on Sebago Lake.
